School Health Advisory Committee

Why do we have a SHAC?

Title 2, Chapter 28, Section 28.004 of the Texas Education Code requires school districts to establish a School Health Advisory Council to assist the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the district’s health education instruction.

What is the role of the SHAC?

The Groveton ISD SHAC serves as an advisory council which provides recommendations, changes and/or additions to the school’s health education curriculum and instruction for consideration by the Groveton ISD Board of Trustees.

The council will look at and discuss issues and concerns that impact the entire district, not just individual campuses.

The district's School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) will hold regular meetings throughout the school year. This council is comprised of parents, community members, and school officials and is led by the district Director of Science.

Notification of upcoming SHAC meetings will be posted at each campus' administrative office at least 72 hours prior to the meeting. Notification of upcoming SHAC meetings, meeting minutes, and a recording of each meeting will be posted on this page.

The duties of the SHAC range from recommending curriculum to developing strategies for integrating curriculum into a coordinated school health program encompassing issues such as school health services, counseling services, a safe and healthy school environment, recess recommendations, improving student fitness, and mental health concerns, and employee wellness.

If you would like additional information or would like to volunteer to serve on this committee then please contact Brittany Barrett at (936) 642-1473 ext. 8204.
